"Purpose of Hebrews"

I.   Purpose of Hebrews: Christ is superior to all things
II.   The important things of Judaism during the 1st century
A.   The Prophets (Heb 1:1-3)
1.   From the very beginning of Hebrews, Christ is shown as being greater than the prophets
2.   He speaks for God in a greater capacity than any prophet previously
B.   The Angels (Heb 1:4-11, 2:2-18)
1.   It is obvious that the people of the time were debating whether or not Jesus was an angel or not; and not God himself
2.   Angel worship was very prominent during the 1st century (they pray to Michael and Gabriel)
3.   Hebrews: Jesus dropped below the angels to become human, just to rise above the angels after his resurrection (illustrates human condition as well)
C.   Being human
1.   Jesus is not a mediator between human and God (no prophet,
2.   We needed him to become human to atone for our sins
D.   Household of God (Heb 3:1-6)
1.   Moses was in charge of God's "household"
2.   Jesus is now in charge of God's "household"
3.   Jesus is greater than Moses (Jesus is worthy of more glory)
E.   Jesus Part I and II (Heb 4:1-11)
1.   Joshua = lit. yeshua
2.   Jesus = lit. yeshua
3.   The new Jesus is greater than the "old Jesus" because he can offer rest where as the "old Jesus" could not provide
F.   High Priest (Heb 4:14-5:10, Gen 14:17-20, Psalm 110:1-7, Heb 7:1-28)
1.   Once a year (Yom Kippur) the high priest sacrifices one goat for all the sins of Israel
2.   Melchizedek
a.   King of Salem
b.   Blesses Abram (Abraham)
c.   Usually the person doing the blessing is greater than the one being blessed
d.   Jesus is in the line of Melchizedek
e.   Melchizedek is eternal/immortal (Heb 7:14)
3.   Jesus is greater than the high priest
G.   Old Covenant (Heb 8:1-13)
1.   The old covenant is obsolete and old news
2.   Christ is the mediator of a greater covenant
3.   Christ is greater than the covenant
H.   Sacrifice (Heb 9:1-28, 10;1-18)
1.   Heb 9 & 10 are redundant because it is so important
2.   Christ is greater than sacrifice
