"The Resting Leader"

I.   The problem - People in general tend to lack margin
A.   Margin is the amount allowed beyond that which is needed
B.   We need margin in 4 areas
1.   Emotional energy
2.   Physical energy
3.   Time
4.   Finances
C.   If you can't handle an increase in demand of 10-20% in any of those 4 areas, you lack margin
II.   The solution: the Sabbath rest
A.   Why should we have a Sabbath
1.   Moses' writings
a.   Genesis 2:2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
b.   Exodus 20:8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
c.   Exodus 34:21 Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.
d.   Numbers 15:32 While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. 35 Then the LORD said to Moses, "The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp." 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.
2.   The writings of the Prophets
a.   Isaiah. 56:2 Blessed is the man who does this, the man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil." 3 Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the LORD say, "The LORD will surely exclude me from his people." And let not any eunuch complain, "I am only a dry tree." 4 For this is what the LORD says: "To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant Ñ
b.   Isaiah 58:13 "If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, 14 then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob." The mouth of the LORD has spoken.
3.   The teachings of Jesus
a.   Luke 4:16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.
b.   John 7:19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" 20 "You are demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?" 21 Jesus said to them, "I did one miracle, and you are all astonished. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment."
c.   Mark 2:23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" 25 He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." 27 Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
4.   The writings of Paul
a.   Acts 15:28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:
b.   Colossians 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.
5.   Summary of the teachings on the Sabbath
a.   Moses and the Prophets: Observe the Sabbath as actions without exception
b.   Christ: Observe the Sabbath as an attitude of the heart
c.   Paul: Observe the Sabbath in the context of freedom
B.   Definitions of Sabbath
1.   Carl Bart: an unplanned day with out grasping and compulsion
2.   Thomas Aquinas: a day of vacation with God
C.   Why should we not have a Sabbath? (popular excuses)
1.   I'll stop working when the work is done
2.   People will think I'm lazy
3.   If I stop working, how will the work get done?
D.   How do we have a Sabbath
1.   The goal is not to be legalistic, but consistent
2.   Marva Dawn's 4 step pattern:
a.   Ceasing of work, anxiety, or control
b.   Resting physically and emotionally
c.   Feasting on God
d.   Embracing others
3.   Eugene Peterson's simpler pattern - play n'pray
a.   Pray - connection with God
b.   Play - a fun activity that we are not usually doing
4.   Practical tips
a.   Look ahead and block out your time
b.   Set aside as much time as you can
c.   Avoid "TO-DO" items
d.   Prepare your home (take precautions to not draw you to work)
e.   Talk openly with others about your Sabbath (especially if your usual conversation is consumed by how busy I am)
f.   Sometimes plan ahead; sometimes be spontaneous
g.   Be creative with other responsibilities (swap kids day)
h.   If you miss one week, schedule it for the next week
III.   Leadership vs. Management (Administration)
A.   Leader focuses on doing the right things
B.   Mangers focus on doing things right
